SPG Visit to La Antigue Arboleda

In May, to visit and review compliance with the rules of our bio certification, or spg, we visited one of the two farms that make up "La Antigua Arboleda", the farm of Amankay and his family.

Located near the old sugar factory, it is an oasis of 2500m2 of shade and a good atmosphere between a greenhouse area and poorly maintained lanes. Before arriving two years ago, the farm had been abandoned for many years.

Amankay showed us his vegetable garden for the house, his farm with 60 avocado trees, several Nisperos, a pear tree, 2 orange trees, 3 Mandarins, Papayas and Canarian Bananas and the stars of the farm, his 23 hens and the 6 new chicks. They live in a wide area below a large medlar tree, which gives them shade and in this season, a lot of delicious food. They are of 3 types, La Andaluza Azula, Isa Brown and Arankana, from Chile. The chickens come from Granja Santa Isabel in Cordoba, and although they come with their beaks cut off, Amankay is replicating the breeds in their natural state. They have plenty of room in their coop, apart from hanging out in the avocado field and sleeping outside on the Nispero tree above the chicken coop.

On his land among the avocado trees, there is also vetiver and melonpear growing together with green manures such as comfrey and beza, and the wild grasses that he lets grow to improve the biodiversity of insects and plants. He does not use any chemical products, but he does sometimes use preparations of microorganisms that he makes himself from soil samples that he collects in the forest.

Many thanks to Amankay and family, Jack, Jose and Mathilde for a very nice visit.
